Minor Injury Units (MIUs)

Minor injury units can treat a range of minor illnesses and injuries which have occurred during the last 14 days, including:

  • sprains and strains
  • minor fractures
  • traumatic wound infections (not surgical wounds)
  • minor burns and scalds
  • head injuries (where the person has not been unconscious)
  • insect and animal bites and stings
  • minor eye injuries
  • cuts, bruising and grazes
  • suspected infections, for example: chest, urinary, eye, ear, skin, throat (when GPs are closed). Nearly all pharmacies also offer a minor illness service. Find your nearest pharmacy and check opening hours.

You can walk into any of our minor injury units without the need of an appointment or calling NHS 111. Live wait and opening times are published online, so please do check before you go as your nearest may not be your quickest.

  • use your NHS account (through the NHS website or NHS App) to book a screening test or vaccination

So that we can get the right type of help for you, our trained patient advisers will ask you for some information regarding the reason for your call.  This information has been requested by the doctors, to ensure you are signposted to the most appropriate member of our healthcare team.

You can request a doctor of your choice, but if that doctor is not available you will be offered another doctor/clinician.  If a doctor wishes to see you for follow up of a medical condition, the Patient Advisors will pre-book you a routine appointment up to two weeks in advance, as it is helpful for continuity of care to try to see the same person.

If you are attending with more than one issue or concern, please let the doctor know at the beginning of your consultation. This will allow the doctor to prioritise which issue is of most concern in case there is not enough time to deal with everything. If you are asked to attend for another consultation to deal with further issues as there is not enough time to deal with them properly, please do not be offended.

However you choose to contact us, we may offer you a consultation:

Home visits

If you are housebound and need an appointment, we will do a home visit. We will phone you first to understand what you need.

To request a home visit, it’s helpful if you phone the practice before 10:30am. Ring us on 01736 710505, and select option 1.

Our Doctors can typically see four patients at the Practice in the time it takes to do a single home visit. There are better facilities for examination at the surgery. For these reasons, we ask patients to come to the Practice if at all possible. However, we can visit you at home if your medical condition means that you cannot attend the surgery. Please be prepared to tell the Patient Advisor about your condition so we can visit the most urgent cases first.

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby.
